DOCUMENTATION STYLES

for college research

Documentation styles are systems for providing information about sources used in research papers.  Documentation styles vary among academic disciplines.  The Modern Language Association style (MLA) is often used in the Humanities (English, Theater, Art, Music, etc.).  The American Psychological Association (APA) style is used in the social sciences (history, sociology, psychology, anthropology, human services, etc.)  Check with your instructor regarding which style you should use for your research work.

NEW! from the Landmark Project-

David Warlick's online "documentation machine" lets you choose your source (book, periodical, published interview, online article, etc.) and enter the information about the source (author, publisher, date of publication, etc.). The machine then gives you the correct in-text parenthetical reference for both MLA and APA styles as well as the correct bibliographic reference for each style. It doesn't get much easier than this!

from the Purdue OWL

The Purdue Online Writing Lab contains everything you need to know about documentation in either style:

MLA / Using Modern Language Association format

APA / Using American Psychological Association format
