MetaGlossary

Search engines such as Google are not good at finding definitions of terms. Other online dictionaries may give you a definition without context and they easily become out-dated. MetaGlossary seeks to pull together Internet definitions onto one fast-loading page.

The Free Encyclopedia

Wikipedia

is a free online encyclopedia that is an excellent quick resource that is compiled and edited by users. A great source of information, but since it is created and edited by people like you, users must be careful to double-check the information.

  • FOLDOC - Computing Dictionary – An online dictionary of computing terms
  • Information Please – Online dictionary, Internet encyclopedia, and almanac reference.  Also, Mapquest is here, great for printing out directions for trips
  • Librarians Guide to the Internet - a searchable, annotated subject directory of nearly 3,200 Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public libraries
  • Internet Reference Links – From the Cornell University Library.  Contains News Sources, Statistics Sources, U.S. Government, state and local government (NY), International Government, The Law, Court Decisions, Treaties, copyright, Electronic Text Resources, Encyclopedias, Directories, Reviews, Style Guides, and other Reference Sites
  • Library of Congress - Is the online resource compiled by the Library of Congress National Digital Library Program. With the participation of other libraries and archives, the program provides a gateway to rich primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States. Includes the American Memory collection.  Over one million items from our historical collections are currently available online. In the coming years, the National Digital Library Program plans to digitize more of the Library's unique American history collections and make them freely available to teachers, students, and the general public over the Internet. Special collections to be digitized include the documents, films, manuscripts, photographs, and sound recordings that tell the American story. The program is funded by congressional appropriations and private sector donations

  • The Perseus Project - From Tufts University is an evolving digital library of resources for the study of the ancient world and beyond.
  • Project Gutenberg – An international collection of e-texts, including classics and light literature.
  • Digital Library – online collections from the New York Public Library. Images and text.
  • Bibliomania - Over 2000 classic texts and Literature Book Notes, Author Biographies, Book Summaries and Reference Books
  • Shoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Images – online collections and exhibitions  from U. of Pennsylvania
  • Biographical Dictionary - This dictionary covers more than 28,000 notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day
  • Virtural Encyclopedia - From RefDesk.com
  • Internet Classics Archive - Students can read many classics from The Odyssey to Plato's Apology, and they can find history on Tacitus and others.
  • The Online Books Page - over 12,000 titles collected in a directory by UPenn.
  • Internet Public Library - A virtual library with a reference department, exhibits, a section for teens, and magazines. Includes the Internet Public Library Reading Room - This "room" contains bookshelves for browsing and searching for entertaining reading, along with links to sites providing other full texts.
  • MEL - The Michigan Electronic Library. Very complete virtual portal to library resources.
  • Digital Librarian - A librarian’s choice of the best of the
    best sites on the web on almost 100 subjects.
