Making Connections

When you're skiing and trying to get to the bottom of the hill, you just point your skis downhill and enjoy the run, right? But it's not always that simple! If you're skiing on Bear Mt. at Killington, VT (pictured above) and want to get to the Killington Base Lodge, you'd better take a look at a trail map to see what connections you need to make. Then you'd better keep your eyes open for trail signs instead of concentrating on every little bump coming your way.

A lot of times, people focus on the details too much, without seeing the big picture. They neglect to make the connections between all the little tidbits of knowledge that their brains are taking in. This is true both in real life and in education, and there's often no trail-map to follow. Therefore, this is how I approach tutoring and teaching; by trying to help the student learn how to make those connections and see the big picture instead of getting bogged down in all the little details.

Personal Interests

I currently serve as the President of the Three Rivers Alumni Association. I joined the association and began serving on the Board of Directors in 2002 as a way of "giving something back" to the Alumni Association and to the school, since I was the recipient of an Alumni Association scholarship when I was a student here. The Alumni Association hosts several fund-raising events each year to pay for the scholarships we award and we're always looking for support from Three Rivers' grads! Check out our website when you get a chance!

In case you didn't figure it out from the picture and references to skiing at the top of the page, I'm an avid skier. Off and on since the early eighties, I've been a member of several ski houses in the Killington, VT area and skied predominantly at Killington (it's hard to justify going elsewhere after buying a season pass to the "Beast of the East"). My biggest year was 1986, when I broke a bone in my hand (while skiing) and was forced to take 6 weeks off from work (tragic, huh?).  I ended up staying right up there almost the whole time and got over 100 days of skiing in that year!

I took some time off from hard-core skiing while going to undergrad school. I got back into it for the few years since then, but now I'm forced into taking some more time off while I'm back in grad school.

Wait, did you hear that? I think I hear the snow-guns roaring off in the distance!
