Placement Test

General Information

After being admitted to the college, all new first-time students are required to complete an assessment of basic skills in mathematics, reading, and writing. Called “Accuplacer” this untimed computerized placement test is designed to help students gain information about their readiness for college-level course work. The test generally takes about 45 minutes. You may not use a calculator on the arithmetic portion of the test, but you may use a calculator on the elementary algebra and college level math portions of the placement test. Results are available the day you take the test. A counselor or advisor will review the results with you. With the assistance of an academic advisor, students then use this information to make decisions about course selections and long-term educational plans. Information on how to schedule the placement test is provided in the Acceptance letter, or you may call 885-2301 for scheduling information.

What to Expect on the Test

The Accuplacer math test is divided into 3 sections:

1. Arithmetic totals 13 questions and includes problems with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and problem solving. You may not use a calculator on the arithmetic section.
2. Elementary Algebra has 12 questions pertaining to operations with integers and fractions, absolute value, operations with algebraic expressions, evaluation of formulas, adding and subtracting monomial and polynomials, simplifying algebraic expressions and factoring.
3. College Level Math covers material in intermediate algebra and precalculus. The test has questions on algebraic operations, solution of equations and inequalities, coordinate geometry, applications, functions and trigonometry. There are free response questions in addition to multiple choice. Not everyone proceeds to the 3rd section.
If you have questions about Accuplacer, call Ms. Cathy Lewis at 885-2312.

Waiver of Placement Testing

Generally, students with an associate degree or higher and other transfer students who have earned college-level credits in English and math with a "C" grade or higher are waived from the Computerized Placement test when they provide unofficial transcripts of prior college coursework or a copy of their college degree.

Challenge Placement Test
If you feel as if the Accuplacer test results place you too low in the math course sequence, you may call Elaine Lafayette in Student Development at 383-5217 to schedule a non-computer retake.
