Math K075 Prealgebra
(formerly Math K078 Basic Math Skills)

3 credit hours. This course is a DEVELOPMENTAL course, which means it is for developing math skills that prepare you to take college level math courses. Students in developmental math courses receive grades with a 0 in front of the letter grade to indicate the credits are not for graduation credit, nor is the course included in the student’s GPA (Grade Point Average).

Students doing work below the C- level in a developmental course will receive “NC” for “no credit” or “MP” for making progress. (No F’s or D’s are awarded.) Students receiving grades 0C- or below are advised to repeat the course. When a student repeats a course at TRCC, the higher grade is the one that counts in the GPA. A student must speak with a Three Rivers Counselor before attempting any course for the third time.

After completing Math 075 with a C or better, students may take Math 095 Elementary Algebra Foundations

If you are having difficulty in Math 075, consider joining a series of free math workshops offer by Marie Peloquin, director of TASC. You may find her in her office in the Mohegan library. Ms. Peloquin’s specialty is math-anxious students. You are welcome to join attend her workshops the semester before you enroll in Math 075 or while you are currently enrolled. The hours and dates of Ms Peloquin’s workshops are posted under the MATH NEWS link on this math department’s home page. Prerequisite: Acceptable placement score

The Three Rivers Book Store sells the new text books bundled with the student solutions manual, a test prep video attached to the inside back cover and the internet based tutorial software called “Math Pro 5”. New bundles are approximately $107 and used books sell for approximately $73. If you purchase a used book, you may want to find one with the student solutions manual, the test prep video and an unopened computer software code for “Math Pro 5”. An unused Math Pro 5 code from any text, any level math, will work for prealgebra. You may purchase MathPro5 software online for $27 at http://vig.prenhall.com/catalog/academic/product/0,1144,0131445421,00.html

Videos lessons: The Mohegan and the Thames libraries have video tapes of the author Ms. Martin-Gay giving 10 or 12 minute lectures on each section in the text. You may also see short lectures by clicking on the television icon in the math pro 5 software.

Every instructor will cover the following sections in the textbook. It is the instructor’s prerogative to include more sections of the textbook.
Sections 1.7, 1.8
All of chapters 2-7
Sections 8.3, 8.4
Chapter 9 as time permits

The final exam in math 095 is the same for all sections of the course. This common final focuses on arithmetic skills – add, subtract, multiply and divide integers, fractions and decimals – find percents, simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions, solve algebraic equations, and solve word problems
