The Human Services Program responds both to the need to prepare students for entry-level positions in human services, and to prepare students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university for a baccalaureate degree in social work (BSW) or some other related field of study in the social sciences.   The curriculum is designed to help students acquire the knowledge, skills and competence in the methods of case management, community organization, group work and supervision, with a focus on families with children, individuals, small groups and communities.

Students who intend to transfer to a school of social work to pursue a BSW degree are urged to investigate and select the institution to which they wish to transfer to as soon as possible since each transfer situation must be planned to meet specific baccalaureate requirements.  This program has an Articulation Agreement with Eastern Connecticut State University's BSW Program.  All of the 60-61 degree credits in the Human Services Program transfer to Eastern's BSW Program.  Many of our graduates in the Human Services Program transfer to Eastern's BSW Program and graduate with their BSW degree in another two years.

Program Outcomes

The Human Services Program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in social service organizations. Students already employed in the field of social services will gain increased knowledge and skills in the methods of case management, group work, community organization and supervision. Students will gain knowledge and skills in providing effective interventions with vulnerable clients. These clients may include many with chronic or global conditions such as: mental illness, poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, etc. Students will show evidence of increased knowledge of identification and indexing of community resources. All students must fulfill a computer literacy and field placement requirement to ensure that each student is proficient in the application of best practice methods in the field of human services.
