Three Rivers Tech Students Brings Robots to Life

Project TLC (Technology Learning Community) students at Three Rivers have been busy this summer -- working with LEGOs. And on August 27, they got to showcase their work in a robot demonstration featuring the LEGO robots they built and programmed during their four-week intensive Summer Institute program.

Students demonstrated how their robots could tell black from white and detect solid objects, light and sound. The robots were capable of performing various tasks through the use of sensors, including “follow the line," navigating a maze, and a “tunnel” excursion.

Students also constructed a robot that moved faster when spurred on by loud noise.

According to Computer Science Technology professor Ronald Leask, the TLC program is especially important for teaching math and language, and can impact students as young as kindergarten. Leask assisted the 24 students, who recently graduated from 12 area high schools.

In addition to programming robots, the Project TLC students spent their summer studying English, math, and first-year college survival skills. They also visited several area companies to see the types of jobs they might one day acquire with their degrees.

Project TLC is a unique program offered exclusively at Three Rivers. Project TLC is a learning community for students in two-year associate degree programs in the fields of engineering technology. The program offers tremendous support services to assist students in earning an associate degree in a chosen engineering technology field.

Project TLC (Technology Learning Community) is part of a three-year $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.
