TASC VISION  STATEMENT:  Student success in college has more to do with study behaviors and attitudes than it does with inherent aptitude. The skills that underlie successful study behaviors can be taught and learned.  Academic success will accompany personal growth, accountability, and independence. This is the foremost principle of the TASC - the Three Rivers Community College Tutoring & Academic Success Centers:  students can learn how to succeed academically. They can learn how to learn. Every part of the TASC program--including peer-tutors, lab support, and skills workshops and outreach--is based on this principle. Every student is on a quest for independence. Each student's quest can be confounded by emotional or psychological issues like stress or poor self-esteem, by struggles with cultural difference or alienation, by frustration with complex course material, by a deficit of coping strategies… the list of complications is long. This office affords each student the respect that anyone involved in challenging experiences deserves and needs: that their quest is valid, that the obstacles they face are real, and that there are useful strategies within their reach for getting past those obstacles.  Working from an orientation which introduces learning theory, the staff will help students identify personal learning issues and styles, and utilize appropriate supports in response, including one on one tutoring, workshops, and various multimedia resources, especially appropriate software programs and videotapes.

 

From this perspective, the Centers develop and maintain close relationships with faculty and counseling and admissions staff who provide input and direction for course assistance and the development of Center procedures, policies, and the identification and recruitment of TASC staff.

 

Every part of this program is designed to meet a student at his or her level, explore the student's immediate and long-term goals, and help them find ways to achieve them. Ultimately, a student should eventually find the services of the office unnecessary because he or she has turned academic skills into academic habits.
