Questions about Learning Disabilities?
If you are a student considering TRCC and you have questions regarding learning disabilities, take a moment and read this page--it may save you considerable frustration later.
Many students with learning disabilities come to TRCC. Some of them want the school to know about their disability, and some dont. Either way is fine with TRCC--its the students call.
Whether or not a student wishes to "disclose" his or her learning disability, it is important for the student to be familiar with the information on this page, so keep reading...
TRCC has a staff member who is familiar with the educational needs of students with learning disabilities (for our purposes here, well include ADD as a type of learning disability). At any rate, that staff member is Chris Scarborough.
If you are a student intending to study at TRCC, it is strongly recommended that you contact Chris Scarborough as soon as possible so that you and he can meet and talk about your college plans. Chris is on campus throughout the Fall and Spring semesters, and through most of the summer. So, if you intend to to start classes in the Fall, you should contact Chris in June to set up an appointment. If you are going to start in January, contact Chris in October.
Based on past experience, you should NOT wait to contact Chris until a week or two before classes start. Enrolling in college is very different from enrolling in high school--enrolling in college involves many steps which cannot be accomplished all at once.
Since Chris is available at TRCC only on Mondays, Tuesdays, and every other Friday, he should be contacted by phone at (860) 892-5751, or, if you prefer, by e-mail at CScarborough@trcc.commnet.edu
When you and Chris meet, it will be helpful for both of of you, if you bring a copy of your disability documentation. It will be kept in a file that is separate from your student file.
If fact, even if you dont want your teachers to know about your learning disability, you and Chris can still talk. Your teachers wont know about your disability unless you want them to know, or if you tell them yourself. This is to protect your privacy, and TRCC takes this seriously.
This is just one of the ways that college is VERY different from high school. However, even though it is different, youre sure to enjoy college life. TRCC works hard at treating you like an adult (sounds good, eh?).
So, get together with Chris and talk. TRCC is confident you can accomplish good things if you want to. Weve seen plenty of others do it!
