Three Rivers Community College is committed to providing students with relevant, engaging, and practical learning experiences beyond the classroom. Through our college's experiential learning opportunities, students are offered a hands-on approach to learning which assists students in gaining a better understanding of their discipline, community and future prospects and becoming more knowledgeable about the field their degree program will lead them into. Students acquire field and job experience to earn academic credit toward the completion of their degree, while experiencing a unique approach to education. Planning for these experiences should begin early in the Program of Study to achieve maximum benefit for the student.
Three Rivers Community College offers a variety of Experiential Learning opportunities. Through the many and varied experiences, students apply and expand their academic knowledge in real-world environments. These experiences include:
Co-ops - Students gain practical field experience with companies that may or may not include compensation for the work done, in addition to academic credit. Co-ops require an agreed upon time commitment between student and employer that is approved by the program coordinator and meets program outcomes. Industry partnerships are common.
Practicums - Students participate in a practical experience in the field of their program which requires close supervision by an industry professional. Practicums will provide academic credit but generally do not provide compensation for work done. Academic credit is earned by documenting the achievement of selected learning goals and objectives. Practicums require an agreed upon time commitment between student and employer that is approved by the program coordinator and meets program outcomes for the course. Please note: Programs which have experiential learning requirements may have specific requirements regarding locations and time, please contact the program coordinator for specific information.
Teaching Assistantships - Students work closely with faculty to have in-classroom experiences relating to teaching and pedagogy while earning academic credit. Commitments include in-class time and may include other responsibilities.
Internships - Students gain work experience in a professional environment that allows for flexibility in testing the waters in different fields of interest while earning academic credit. Internships require an agreed upon time commitment between student and employer that is approved by the program coordinator and meets course/program outcomes.
