As a result of the nearly two-hour session, members of the Chelsea Community Development Group LLC and administrators from the college will meet, possibly in September, to review the developer's proposal. The parties have yet to meet independently of state departments to discuss the proposal that calls for consolidating the college to an area along the harbor.
"The presentation made by the developer was well received and as a result, this has opened up communication between the board of trustees and the developer, who have agreed to meet to determine what needs to be accomplished," City Council President Richard Abele said after the meeting.
Approximately 20 people attended the session, including members of the Community College Board of Trustees and the new president of the college, state representatives, Department of Public Works Commissioner T.R. Anson and members of his staff.
The group was there to hear the developer's proposal and to discuss how the feasibility study on relocating the college to downtown should be conducted.
Ronald Aliano, the lead developer of the group, said he was pleased with the outcome of the meeting and looks forward to sitting down with college president Grace Jones to discuss the plan.
Aliano expressed concern that if his group is held to the $62 million limit that has been set for the project, he would not be able to comply with the college's mission statement and neither would the proposals to put the college on the former Norwich Hospital site or to consolidate it on one of the existing campuses.
The study is due to the state by Oct. 1 and the city already has promised to appropriate $100,000 to pay for its completion.
