Three Rivers is a huge asset here
Editor:
I look at the traffic filing in and out of Three Rivers Community College and I see motivated individuals striving to make better lives for themselves and their families. The Norwich City Council evidently sees something entirely different.
I received an associate's degree from Mohegan Community College, the forerunner to Three Rivers, which led to my bachelor's degree and job promotions that eventually allowed me to build a home off Harland Road, near the college.
After the moving vans pack up Three Rivers Community College, the traffic on Harland Road will still be bad and basements will still need sump pumps. Those energetic college students, professors, and administrators will be spending time in a more appreciative community.
The pure self-interest and politics that led to the City Council's resolution to oppose college consolidation on Mahan Drive is a disgrace -- to say nothing of shortsighted. Sure, there are other ways to consolidate the college, but none that will please everyone.
The Norwich City Council needed to show some practical leadership as representatives of the entire city. The resolution to oppose consolidation on Mahan Drive leaves the council with little more to do then pray that the state does not decide to move the college.
The thought of Norwich losing this fine institution simply leaves me almost speechless.
