In 1994 the Connecticut State Tartan was designed at Three Rivers by Professors Brent A. Maynard, Kathleen Swope, and Noel Alexis. The tartan bill, sponsored by Representative Michael Caron of the 44th district, was passed during the 1995 legislature session and signed into law by Governor John Rowland on 22 May 1995.
The colors of the Connecticut tartan are as follows:
Blue for Long Island Sound
Green for the forests
Red and yellow, for autumn leaves
Gray for granite
White for snow.
The Connecticut tartan is an asymmetric tartan, the white stripe being offset; thereby, symbolizing the irregularity of snowfall in Connecticut.
At this time approximately half the States have tartans. Some cities, towns, and counties have their own district tartans. All ten Canadian provinces, Yukon, and Northwest Territories have provincial or territorial tartans. All of Irelands counties have tartans.
Neckties, scarves, and ladies head squares are available at both Three Rivers bookstores. Two dollars from each sale goes toward a scholarship fund!
Possible idea for the future: Should Three Rivers design its own school tartan?
